About the Show
My Mother's Lesbian Jewish-Wiccan Wedding is a delightful, true-story musical by David Hein and Irene Sankoff, chronicling Hein's mother, Claire, leaving her husband in Nebraska for a job in Ottawa, where she discovers her sexuality, falls for a Wiccan woman named Jane, and navigates coming out to her homophobic Jewish mother and teenage son (David), all while exploring themes of identity, love, and marriage equality in Canada, culminating in a unique, cross-cultural wedding.
Character Descriptions:
DAVID (Tenor, 20’s-30’s)
A straight, friendly musician, who plays acoustic guitar for most of the show.
If you are interested in being considered for the role of "David" please plan to accompany yourself on the acoustic guitar.
CLAIRE (Mezzo, Belter, 37-47)
David’s Jewish mother and a psychology professor.
We are seeking Jewish actors for the roles of Claire.
JANE (Mezzo, Belter, 37-47)
Claire’s free-spirited Wiccan political girlfriend and a therapist who is passionate about the gay marriage movement.
YOUNG DAVID (Tenor, 13-20)
A well-adjusted teenager who loves his parents and Nintendo, he is a younger version of David.
PENNY/BECKI (Mezzo with some soprano, 20's-30's)
Penny is a political, lesbian choir member. Becki is a waitress at Hooters, who is bubbly, positive and excited about her job. She is fit and attractive, but not overtly sexual.
GARTH (Baritone 30’s-40’s)
David's father and Claire's ex-husband. Like Claire, he loves his son. Never lecherous or vicious, he is instead earnest and often genuinely thrown for a loop.
MICHELLE (Mezzo with some soprano, 20's-30's)
A young, lesbian religious studies dropout, she is disillusioned with romance but welcomes Claire, David, stray cats and choir members into her home.
We are seeking Jewish actors for the roles of Michelle.
IRENE (Mezzo, 20's-30's)
David's girlfriend and an aspiring actress and student.
All cast members except for David and Claire play various other chorus parts.
