Reannin Theatre Group and the Shelterbelt Theatre present

Acrobat

Written and Directed by Eric Salonis
April 17th - May 11th

"Pick a starting point...a dangerous one, way up high...and just don't lose your balance."  One year ago, Arthur's oldest friend, Michael, committed suicide, the very same night Arthur met his current boyfriend, Douglas. Today, on that double-edged anniversary, the bisexual Douglas meets the mysterious Donna at a coffee shop.  Arthur is on a path of self-destruction, haunted and lost in the pain of that night, one year ago.  Douglas is torn between his love and need for Arthur and his newfound passion for Donna and her cold seductive manner.  As the relationships and the friendships surrounding them try to maintain some sort of balance in a world of cynicism and sexual promiscuity, the lives of Arthur, Douglas and those closest to them will be shaken...because Donna is far more deeply rooted into their lives than they realize.

Acrobat is a play which has taken on a life of its own.  Many familiar with the Omaha theater scene have already heard about Acrobat and are eager to see it performed.  Since 2006, Reannin Theatre Group has prepared to perform the play several times, but has encountered more than its share of obstacles along the way.  Shelterbelt Theatre is proud to work with this talented group of artists to bring Salonis's work to light.

Acrobat is showing at the Shelterbelt Theatre, 3225 California Street, Omaha, from April 17th through May 11th, 2008.  Performances are at 8:00 PM Thursdays through Saturdays and 6:00 PM on Sundays. Tickets are $15.00 General Admission, $12.00 for Students, Senior Citizens, and groups of 10 or more. Two-for-one pricing on tickets, opening weekend only. The Play Reading Series, sponsored by Metro Community College and The Shelterbelt Theatre, continues.

On Monday, May 5th, at 7:00 pm Stained Skin will be read for the public.  It's a new work in progress by Asian American playwright Maiko Mitchem, set in the midst of the Japanese American sugar cane workers' struggle for dignity and identity in Hawai'i.  One young woman defies company authority and social pressure to honor and continue her brother's fight for the rights of their community and generation.

The free reading will be held on the Fort Omaha Campus in Room 110 of Building 10. As always, an open discussion will follow the reading.

Summer Play Festival Program Announced:

After reviewing submissions for Summer Stock, four local artists have been selected to join us in producing a weekend of theatre each this July. They are an eclectic and talented group, and their collaboration with the Shelterbelt will benefit us in many ways.

Bryan Poole is a musician, visual artist and improvisational genius. He’ll create a fresh evening of storytelling, art and music on each of his nights.

Doug Hayko is a cutting-edge performance artist that combines a stunning, three-dimensional environment with a contemplative sense of humor. He’s performed his in-your-face work all over town, at least east of 72nd Street.

Susann Suprenant is a brilliant contemporary theatre artist and scholar specializing in innovative adaptations that both glorify the past and project the audience into the future.

Katie F-S is a gifted performer and poet that has slammed her way across the country. Recently, she’s begun directing for the stage, transforming Slam Poetry into a choral, theatrical experience.

Of the submissions, these artists were selected based on proven artistic excellence and diversity.

Run Dates Are:

July 10th to August 3rd

Stay tuned for the specific performance schedule and prices

Note: Shelterskelter scripts are due by August 1, 2008.
